A Community Built Around Daily Living, Not Diagnosis
Mike Courtney is a marketing researcher and futurist. Someone who spends his career studying what’s possible rather than predicting the future outright. A while back, he brought me an idea he called Daily Living Labs. The premise is simple but honestly kind of overdue. There are plenty of organizations built around specific conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, MS, Alzheimer’s and they do great work. But most of them aren’t set up to invent things. They’re not innovation hubs. Daily Living Labs exists to fill that gap, connecting caregivers, engineers, welders, 3D-printing hobbyists, whoever around the actual activities of daily living that families struggle with every day.
The idea isn’t complicated. Someone in the community has a problem. Someone else has a skill or an idea that could solve it. Nobody has to reinvent the wheel alone.
From One Photo to a Personalized Video
The part of this conversation that hit closest to home for me was hearing Mike describe what came out of a semester of research with Professor Cassinis students at the University of North Texas. It started with something we told them about our son Michael, he lights up when he sees himself on a screen. That one observation turned into an actual tool.
Here’s how simple it is. You take one photo of your child. If they’re nonverbal or have limited speech like our son you record whatever sounds or words you can capture over a day or two that’s genuinely all you need. From there, the app can generate video of your child doing things they haven’t mastered yet in their own voice with their own face. Folding laundry, putting on socks correctly, applying deodorant, brushing their teeth the right way and in the video they’re getting cheered on the whole time.
Is it perfect? No, Mike was upfront that what we saw is version 1.0 a little rough around the edges. But watching your kid “teach” himself and watching him respond to it, is something I didn’t expect to feel so strongly about.
Sensors That Don’t Require Cooperation
One thing a lot of us deal with is a child who simply won’t wear something like a watch, a wristband or a patch. So when Mike mentioned a wireless sensor that reads heart rate, respiration and even blood pressure without touching the body that got my attention. We installed one above our son’s bed. It tracks his sleep.
That sounds small until you live it. A bad night’s sleep for our son doesn’t just mean he’s tired, it can mean more seizures, harder behavior days and less patience. Now our team knows. First thing in the morning is to brace for a rough day or expect a good one. It’s not magic, it’s just information we didn’t have before gathered without anyone having to strap something to him.

Mike Carr (00:05): Welcome to another episode of Autism Labs. We have a really special guest today, someone I’ve known for many years a futurist, a university professor, an angel investor, a successful entrepreneur, and more. I want Mike Courtney to tell you a little about himself, and then we’re going to talk about how to apply technology to really help those with complex special needs. There’s a lot of tech out there today, a lot of AI. The challenge is: how do I actually use it? What are some real-world applications that apply to me and my kids today? Mike, please introduce yourself.
Mike Courtney (00:43): Sure. We’ve known each other for a while, haven’t we? My background is as a marketing researcher and a futurist. Marketing research means surveys, focus groups, ethnography things focused on the present. Futurist means looking at what the possibilities of the future might be. We don’t predict anything; I’m not Nostradamus. But I think the first thing we need to do is revisit the definition of technology: it’s the application of knowledge and science to solve human problems. Everyone’s talking about AI and robotics, but we can’t forget that AI also helps us invent physical items that improve daily life. It doesn’t always have to be electronic we can use AI to think through strategy and possibilities we bring into the physical world.
Mike Carr (01:50): One concept you brought to the table a while back was Daily Living Labs. Can you tell listeners what that is and share your vision for it?
Mike Courtney (02:09): Daily Living Labs is a community for caregivers and individuals with disabilities focused on activities of daily living, or ADLs. There are plenty of organizations focused on specific conditions autism, cerebral palsy, MS, Alzheimer’s and they do great work, but most aren’t innovation groups. Daily Living Labs helps people find things that already exist, build the things that don’t, and integrate all of it so it’s actually manageable. The idea is for the community to surface issues individually or in groups and have others pay it forward: “I don’t have that issue, but I have an idea,” or “I can help bring that to life because I have a relevant skill woodworking, welding, 3D printing, whatever it might be.”
Mike Carr (03:25): You’ve worked with several universities, including recently with folks at the University of North Texas in Dallas-Fort Worth. What simple, real-world applications have you seen? A lot of parents don’t have the bandwidth to take on a big learning curve with AI, but I know you’ve found things that seem obvious once you hear about them even if they weren’t obvious before.
Mike Courtney (04:09): We’ve all noticed that looking at things through a different lens changes what we see. Caregivers and individuals with disabilities are often just trying to keep daily life moving. An outsider like me looks at it and asks, “Why hasn’t somebody solved this?” Sometimes the answer is “that wouldn’t work,” but sometimes it’s “oh, we hadn’t thought of that.” That’s the inspiration behind Daily Living Labs. Throughout my career doing research wheelchairs, blind and low vision, hearing disabilities I’d end up with extra notes at the end: “By the way, I noticed this, and here’s an idea.” Sometimes those ideas were valuable. This past semester with Professor Cassinis Texas students, we did exactly that. When we interviewed you and Kay about your son, Michael, you told us he reacts really positively when he sees himself on a video screen. So we had the idea: what if we used AI to take his image and create videos of him doing things skills you want him to learn? And we built it. It’s version 1.0, rough around the edges, but technology moves fast. Version 1.0 can quickly become version two, three, four, and beyond, especially with a community growing in the same direction.
Mike Carr (06:15): For folks listening, in version 2.0, all you need is a smartphone. Who doesn’t have one? You need one picture of your special needs teen or adult child, and maybe some audio not much. If they’re nonverbal, like our son, you might wonder how you’ll get audio. Over a day or two of intentional recording, we captured enough of how he sounds to work with. You load it into the app Mike and his students built, and now he can watch himself say words he hasn’t spoken yet, in his own voice. A speech therapist can build smarts into the app so it listens to him make a sound and responds repeats it differently, shows the mouth shape needed. Then you take it further into video: with text prompts, you create a scene where your child watches themselves do something they haven’t mastered folding clothes properly, putting on socks, applying deodorant, brushing teeth. And they get cheers and encouragement in the background. It’s genuinely exciting. You also mentioned the Aqara sensor, a wireless sensor now installed above our son’s bed. Can you talk about that?
Mike Courtney (08:15): This goes back to something I’ve been telling people for the past couple of years: when you hit a frustration or a challenge, first assume it’s already been solved, you just haven’t found the solution yet. More often than not, that turns out to be true. In this case, someone said, “I wish I could detect these things, but the person in my life won’t wear anything.” So we looked for something that doesn’t need to be worn. At CES this past January in Las Vegas I’ve gone for decades. I saw sensors that can detect heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure from a distance, no wearable required. Most people don’t know these things exist. Once you know, you can put them together and essentially build a home that acts like a caregiver watching, reminding, warning, guiding, communicating. Imagine a video that looks like you, instructing: “Put your socks on, pull them up, now the shoe, now tie it.” And eventually, a camera watching them actually do it and offering real-time correction, the way a person would. Technology is getting closer to doing what a person would do.
Mike Carr (10:38): You can start simple. With the Aqara sensor, some might ask why heart rate or pulse without a wearable matters. We put it over our son’s bed to measure sleep. Any parent knows a good night’s sleep means a better day, fewer stress episodes. Our son is nonverbal, severely autistic, has seizures and other behaviors we’re trying to correlate. Good sleep, better behavior. Bad sleep, we put the team on alert he may have a rough day. It helps everyone set expectations and make adjustments. Then, as you’re describing, you can layer in a database of sleep patterns and behavior mitigation, almost like an AI partner making suggestions. Bad night’s sleep, but great weather outside, and the AI knows Michael enjoys walking and basketball so maybe today calls for more physical activity and fewer mental exercises. Do you have other examples of where you see this heading?
Mike Courtney (12:47): At the end of the day, we want to build a community, a place people can go for answers and help they can’t find on their own. Sometimes it’s just connecting people to things that already exist. Look at everyone’s extended network: doctors, engineers, lawyers, designers, software and hardware people. The community already has what it needs to solve these problems people just need to connect those dots. I think the exciting part is figuring out what leads to things like a bad night’s sleep, and course-correcting before it happens. We all have those days where something small tips things over, but really it was ten things building up to it. If we can track that data and say, “We’re at step seven of ten toward a bad night let’s intervene now,” that’s powerful. And once something works in one environment, we can share that “recipe” with other families, so they’re not building from scratch.
Mike Carr (14:56): You’ve mentioned data a lot, and I think parents really care about this. You’re not with your child 24 hours a day. Different therapists see different pieces, and no one sees the whole picture. Even when someone is present, if a crisis happens, everyone’s focused on managing it, not documenting it. So making data collection automatic and passive matters sensors tracking heart rate and perspiration without effort, or a camera that’s always seeing and hearing what your child sees and hears, correlated to spikes in heart rate or unusual behavior. AI can go back afterward and say, “Here’s what they saw and heard right before that heart rate spike” and the team can review it together. What are you most optimistic about, having gone to CES for years? What’s coming soon versus further down the road?
Mike Courtney (17:12): As we collect more data, in some cases we get confident enough to say, “When you see this, here’s what’s allowed to happen automatically.” Other things get surfaced so a human can decide whether to intervene. Technology serves us we’re the ultimate decision-makers. But I think one clear pattern over the past couple of decades is the shift from periodic to continuous measurement. Many of us wear something today an Apple Watch or similar that captures data continuously, instead of once a year at a doctor’s visit. We now know more of what’s going on, so we can address it in real time instead of comparing year to year. Applied to people with different needs, that’s exciting every day can be a challenge, and the more we understand what adds up to a hard day versus a good one, the better we can intervene for the people we love. Continuous monitoring is going to be huge.
